SUMMARY:Swift Recovery Project: Home Assessments
DESCRIPTION:Following February’s registration window\, the Swift Recovery Project now moves into its assessment phase. Between 1 and 21 March\, our volunteer team will be visiting participating homes across Haslemere\, Shottermill and Beacon Hill to check whether each property offers the right conditions for swift nesting. \n\n\n\nSwifts need a high\, sheltered position\, ideally under eaves or gables\, with a clear flight path free from overhanging trees or wires. They approach their nest holes at speed\, so ensuring safe access is essential. Assessments also help us determine the best orientation for each box\, avoiding overheating and maximising the chances of attracting breeding pairs. \n\n\n\nThese visits are quick\, friendly and carried out from the outside of the property. Once assessments are complete\, eligible homes will be scheduled for installation during the final project phase in late March and early April\, just before the swifts return from Africa. \n\n\n\nThis assessment window is a key step in creating a network of safe\, suitable nest sites across the town\, a community effort to welcome these extraordinary birds back to our summer skies.

DESCRIPTION:Haslemere Biodiversity is delighted to share that our Chair\, Dr Philippa Guest\, has been invited to present a case study at the 7th annual Surrey Biodiversity & Planning Conference\, hosted by the Surrey Nature Partnership. \n\n\n\nThis respected annual gathering brings together planners\, ecologists\, local authorities\, community groups and nature‑focused professionals from across the county. Philippa will be sharing insights from the Haslemere Biodiversity Group’s work on Haslemere’s Nature Recovery Strategy (HNRS) which offers a practical\, community‑driven example of nature recovery in action. \n\n\n\nHer 10‑minute presentation will explore what has worked well\, the challenges encountered\, and how the planning system has shaped the development of the HNRS. A live Q&A session will follow\, giving attendees the chance to dig deeper into the process and learn from Haslemere’s experience. \n\n\n\nAbout the Conference\n\n\n\nNow in its seventh year\, the Surrey Biodiversity & Planning Conference brings together around 100 professionals for a day of: \n\n\n\n\nEngaging keynote talks\n\n\n\nInspiring case studies from across Surrey\n\n\n\nHands‑on workshops\n\n\n\nUpdates on the Surrey Local Nature Recovery Strategy \n\n\n\nPlenty of friendly networking opportunities\n\n\n\n\nIn the afternoon\, participants can choose between exploring the Living Planet Centre or joining a guided canalside walk. Tickets include lunch and refreshments\, with discounted rates available for students\, community groups\, parish and town councils\, and public‑sector attendees. \n\n\n\nThis Year’s Theme\n\n\n\nChallenges and Successes of the Planning System for Nature Recovery \n\n\n\nSpeakers from standout nature‑recovery projects across Surrey will share honest reflections on what’s working\, what’s difficult\, and how planning frameworks can better support ecological outcomes. SUMMARY:Swift Recovery Project: Nest Box Installations
DESCRIPTION:The Swift Recovery Project now enters its most exciting phase: installing swift nest boxes across Haslemere\, Shottermill and Beacon Hill. Following February’s registration window and the March assessment visits\, our volunteer installation teams will be fitting boxes between 22 March and 16 April 2026\, just in time for the swifts’ return from Africa in early May. \n\n\n\nEach installation is carried out by trained volunteers who have donated their time\, skills and equipment to support the project. Boxes are fitted at second‑floor height or higher\, in sheltered positions with clear flight paths\, the conditions swifts need to safely access their nest holes at speed. Where appropriate\, streets will also receive swift callers\, which play attraction calls to help passing birds locate new nest sites. \n\n\n\nThis installation period is the culmination of months of community effort. Every box fitted is a new opportunity for swifts to breed\, helping to reverse decades of decline and bring their joyful summer “screaming parties” back to our skies. \n\n\n\nResidents who registered will be contacted with their installation date. Those on the waitlist will be notified if additional capacity becomes available. \n\n\n\nTogether\, we’re creating a network of safe\, permanent nesting places\, a legacy for Haslemere’s wildlife and future generations.

SUMMARY:Bats at Bedtime: The Sunset Survey
DESCRIPTION:The Sunset Survey\, run by the Bat Conservation Trust as part of the National Bat Monitoring Programme\, is a brilliant way to discover the bats and other nocturnal wildlife living alongside us. Taking place from April to October\, it’s designed for complete beginners as well as seasoned nature‑watchers\, and is perfect for families\, friends\, or anyone curious about the wildlife that wakes up when we wind down. \n\n\n\nAll you need to do is spend one hour from sunset (or an hour before sunrise) watching from your window\, balcony\, garden\, or local green space. Record any bats you see swooping overhead\, as well as other night‑time visitors such as foxes\, hedgehogs\, owls\, or moths. Once you’ve completed your hour\, simply submit your sightings to the Bat Conservation Trust to help build a national picture of how bats are faring across the UK. \n\n\n\nThe Sunset Survey is one of the easiest and most rewarding ways to take part in citizen science\, no specialist equipment or prior experience needed. Just step outside\, look up\, and let the night unfold.
