SUMMARY:Swift Recovery Project: Nest Box Installations
DESCRIPTION:The Swift Recovery Project now enters its most exciting phase: installing swift nest boxes across Haslemere\, Shottermill and Beacon Hill. Following February’s registration window and the March assessment visits\, our volunteer installation teams will be fitting boxes between 22 March and 16 April 2026\, just in time for the swifts’ return from Africa in early May. \n\n\n\nEach installation is carried out by trained volunteers who have donated their time\, skills and equipment to support the project. Boxes are fitted at second‑floor height or higher\, in sheltered positions with clear flight paths\, the conditions swifts need to safely access their nest holes at speed. Where appropriate\, streets will also receive swift callers\, which play attraction calls to help passing birds locate new nest sites. \n\n\n\nThis installation period is the culmination of months of community effort. Every box fitted is a new opportunity for swifts to breed\, helping to reverse decades of decline and bring their joyful summer “screaming parties” back to our skies. \n\n\n\nResidents who registered will be contacted with their installation date. Those on the waitlist will be notified if additional capacity becomes available. \n\n\n\nTogether\, we’re creating a network of safe\, permanent nesting places\, a legacy for Haslemere’s wildlife and future generations.

Once assessments are complete\, eligible homes will be scheduled for installation during the final project phase in late March and early April\, just before the swifts return from Africa. \n\n\n\nThis assessment window is a key step in creating a network of safe\, suitable nest sites across the town\, a community effort to welcome these extraordinary birds back to our summer skies.

These extraordinary birds have declined by around 68% in the South‑East since 1994\, largely due to the loss of traditional nesting spaces in our buildings. By installing swift nest boxes across key streets in Haslemere\, Shottermill and Beacon Hill\, we’re working with partners to reverse this trend and rebuild thriving local colonies. \n\n\n\nThe registration window is the first step. If you live on a target street and received a leaflet\, you’re invited to register for a swift box installation. Homes will be assessed in March for suitability\, swifts need a high\, sheltered spot with a clear flight path\, and installations will take place in late March and early April\, just before the birds return from Africa. \n\n\n\nBoxes and installation are offered at £60\, made possible by an incredible volunteer team donating time\, materials and expertise. SUMMARY:Big Garden Birdwatch
DESCRIPTION:The Big Garden Birdwatch is the UK’s biggest citizen‑science wildlife survey. It takes place every year and helps the RSPB track how our much‑loved garden birds are faring. Participants simply spend one hour recording the birds they see in their garden\, balcony or local green space over the Birdwatch weekend\, and submit their sightings via the RSPB website. \n\n\n\nAlmost 600\,000 people took part in Big Garden Birdwatch 2025\, collectively counting over 9.1 million birds. House Sparrows once again claimed the top spot as the most‑recorded species across the UK. Blue Tits held steady in second place\, while Starlings dropped from third to fourth after recording their lowest numbers since the Birdwatch began. \n\n\n\nThe long‑term picture remains sobering. The RSPB highlights that the UK has lost 38 million birds from our skies over the past 60 years\, a stark reminder of why events like the Big Garden Birdwatch matter so much. Whether you’re part of a local environmental group\, a curious gardener\, or looking to get involved in citizen science\, this event offers practical inspiration. \n\n\n\nHaslemere’s role as a wildlife corridor hub linking the South Downs and Surrey Hills makes local gardening efforts especially powerful. DESCRIPTION:Many African birds migrate north to escape the summer heat\, with some stopping in the UK. As Autumn nears\, they prepare to return home\, making August perfect for observing their migration. \n\n\n\nThe Surrey Wildlife Trust is organising an event hosted by Dan Banks from the British Trust for Ornithology who will discuss Surrey bird migrations after summer\, focusing on routes and the importance of bird ringing in understanding migration. \n\n\n\nTalks will focus on swallows\, martins and swifts as well as the reedbed birds that settle in Tice’s Meadow.
