SUMMARY:Swift Recovery Project: Nest Box Installations
DESCRIPTION:The Swift Recovery Project now enters its most exciting phase: installing swift nest boxes across Haslemere\, Shottermill and Beacon Hill. Following February’s registration window and the March assessment visits\, our volunteer installation teams will be fitting boxes between 22 March and 16 April 2026\, just in time for the swifts’ return from Africa in early May. \n\n\n\nEach installation is carried out by trained volunteers who have donated their time\, skills and equipment to support the project. Boxes are fitted at second‑floor height or higher\, in sheltered positions with clear flight paths\, the conditions swifts need to safely access their nest holes at speed. Where appropriate\, streets will also receive swift callers\, which play attraction calls to help passing birds locate new nest sites. \n\n\n\nThis installation period is the culmination of months of community effort. Every box fitted is a new opportunity for swifts to breed\, helping to reverse decades of decline and bring their joyful summer “screaming parties” back to our skies. \n\n\n\nResidents who registered will be contacted with their installation date. Those on the waitlist will be notified if additional capacity becomes available. \n\n\n\nTogether\, we’re creating a network of safe\, permanent nesting places\, a legacy for Haslemere’s wildlife and future generations.

SUMMARY:Swift Recovery Project: Home Assessments
DESCRIPTION:Following February’s registration window\, the Swift Recovery Project now moves into its assessment phase. Between 1 and 21 March\, our volunteer team will be visiting participating homes across Haslemere\, Shottermill and Beacon Hill to check whether each property offers the right conditions for swift nesting. \n\n\n\nSwifts need a high\, sheltered position\, ideally under eaves or gables\, with a clear flight path free from overhanging trees or wires. They approach their nest holes at speed\, so ensuring safe access is essential. Assessments also help us determine the best orientation for each box\, avoiding overheating and maximising the chances of attracting breeding pairs. \n\n\n\nThese visits are quick\, friendly and carried out from the outside of the property. Once assessments are complete\, eligible homes will be scheduled for installation during the final project phase in late March and early April\, just before the swifts return from Africa. \n\n\n\nThis assessment window is a key step in creating a network of safe\, suitable nest sites across the town\, a community effort to welcome these extraordinary birds back to our summer skies.

SUMMARY:Swift Recovery Project: Registration Window
DESCRIPTION:Haslemere Biodiversity is launching the Swift Recovery Project\, a community‑led effort to welcome swifts back to our summer skies. These extraordinary birds have declined by around 68% in the South‑East since 1994\, largely due to the loss of traditional nesting spaces in our buildings. By installing swift nest boxes across key streets in Haslemere\, Shottermill and Beacon Hill\, we’re working with partners to reverse this trend and rebuild thriving local colonies. \n\n\n\nThe registration window is the first step. If you live on a target street and received a leaflet\, you’re invited to register for a swift box installation. Homes will be assessed in March for suitability\, swifts need a high\, sheltered spot with a clear flight path\, and installations will take place in late March and early April\, just before the birds return from Africa. \n\n\n\nBoxes and installation are offered at £60\, made possible by an incredible volunteer team donating time\, materials and expertise. If cost is a barrier\, please let us know; we’re fundraising to support residents who need help to take part. \n\n\n\nRegister by 15 February 2026 (by emailing us at info@haslemerebiodiversity.org.uk) to join the project and help bring the joy of swifts back to Haslemere’s skies.

SUMMARY:Big Garden Birdwatch
DESCRIPTION:The Big Garden Birdwatch is the UK’s biggest citizen‑science wildlife survey. It takes place every year and helps the RSPB track how our much‑loved garden birds are faring. Participants simply spend one hour recording the birds they see in their garden\, balcony or local green space over the Birdwatch weekend\, and submit their sightings via the RSPB website. \n\n\n\nAlmost 600\,000 people took part in Big Garden Birdwatch 2025\, collectively counting over 9.1 million birds. House Sparrows once again claimed the top spot as the most‑recorded species across the UK. Blue Tits held steady in second place\, while Starlings dropped from third to fourth after recording their lowest numbers since the Birdwatch began. \n\n\n\nThe long‑term picture remains sobering. The RSPB highlights that the UK has lost 38 million birds from our skies over the past 60 years\, a stark reminder of why events like the Big Garden Birdwatch matter so much. Register to take part now (via the button below) and the RSPB will prompt you on what to do and when.

SUMMARY:🌿Wildlife Gardening Event
DESCRIPTION:Growing Biodiversity at HomeJoin us at Haslemere Museum for an evening dedicated to the power of gardens – not just as places of beauty and relaxation\, but as vital habitats in the fight to restore biodiversity. With 31% of Haslemere’s land made up of urban\, suburban and their gardens\, the potential for community-led biodiversity action is enormous. Every compost heap\, hedge\, and flowerbed has the potential to support pollinators\, birds\, and native species – and together\, we can turn our gardens into a thriving network of life. \n\n\n\nThis event brings together expert voices from the Bumblebee Conservation Trust and Guildford Swifts to share practical tips\, inspiring stories\, and science-backed strategies for making your garden a haven for wildlife. Whether you’re part of a local environmental group\, a curious gardener\, or looking to get involved in citizen science\, this event offers practical inspiration. \n\n\n\nHaslemere’s role as a wildlife corridor hub linking the South Downs and Surrey Hills makes local gardening efforts especially powerful. By gardening with biodiversity in mind\, we can amplify our local impact and help species move\, adapt\, and survive. \n\n\n\n🌱 We’d love you to bring your young people along – to spark their curiosity\, expand their sense of possibility\, and show them how local action can shape a wilder\, more resilient future. This is a chance to learn\, connect\, and be part of a growing movement rooted in hope and community. \n\n\n\nLight bites to keep us going will be provided in the interval\, so please register your attendance via the event link below so we can provide accordingly.

SUMMARY:Water testing on the River Wey
DESCRIPTION:There are a number of regular tasks which need to be done to help look after the river and its environs. This can be managing the scrub and trees on the areas of land owned by the River Wey Trust; regular ‘balsam bashes’ tackling the spread of Himalayan Balsam (and other invasives) along the river; water quality testing; river search and kick sampling for invertebrates as a measure of the health of the ecology. Water sampling happens on the last Sunday of every month\, and volunteers are asked to email ahead of time if they wish to attend.

SUMMARY:Churt Rd Verge Wildflower Sowing
DESCRIPTION:The creation of a 750m-long wildflower verge on Churt Road is a local initiative designed to reverse insect decline. An event to sow a native meadow wildflower mix was held in October with help from local volunteers and partners; Buglife\, the National Trust and Haslemere Town Council. The central portion of the verge will be left uncut until mid-summer with the verge edges being cut regularly by Haslemere Town Council to allow local residents to walk along the pathways on either side. \n\n\n\nThis verge will make an important contribution to the Haslemere B-Line\, part of a national network of insect superhighways that aims to restore and create wildflower-rich habitat stepping stones to benefit insect pollinators\, other wildlife and people.

SUMMARY:National Polecat Survey (2024-25)
DESCRIPTION:Polecats were once a common and widespread carnivorous mammals native to England\, Wales and Scotland. However\, by 1915 the polecat had been eradicated from most of its former British range\, remaining only in a small stronghold of mid-Wales and the English borders. \n\n\n\nDue to a combination of factors\, including legal protection under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981\, the population is now slowly recovering and spreading across Britain. VWT monitors its recovery using National Surveys that rely on records of polecats being submitted by members of the public (also known as citizen or community scientists). This data is vital for research into this little-known species\, which leaves few field signs for study by other survey methods. \n\n\n\nVWT’s National Polecat Survey is appealing to members of the public to record the presence of polecats\, and will run from 2024 until the end of 2025. This is the only dedicated national survey for polecats and is the fourth in a series of national surveys by VWT that have taken place since the 1990s. Any sightings (dead or alive) can be reported via their website.

SUMMARY:Haslemere Information Hub Display
DESCRIPTION:Haslemere Information Hub is a community rail initiative helping to promote the town\, the neighbouring Surrey Hills\, South Downs and attractions within easy reach for visitors by rail. The initiative involves local and regional organisations working with South Western Railway\, with guidance from the Community Rail Network. The Hub\, located to the left hand side of the entrance to Haslemere Station\, uses its space to display information from and about local groups. They were kind enough to invite Haslemere Biodiversity to display information about dormouse and riparian mammals mini-projects for reference by local residents and visitors.
