These open\, sun‑lit habitats support an extraordinary range of rare and specialist species\, from ground‑nesting birds to reptiles\, invertebrates and wildflowers. \n\n\n\nOur Heathlands & Grasslands drop‑in is a chance to learn what makes these habitats so special\, why they are internationally significant\, and how local people\, land managers and volunteers are helping to protect and restore them. It will be a relaxed\, friendly evening with maps\, displays\, local experts and plenty of time for questions. More details here. \n\n\n\nWhat you’ll be able to explore\n\n\n\nRare Heathland Species\n\n\n\nDiscover the wildlife that depends on our lowland heaths\, including nightjars\, woodlarks\, Dartford warblers\, sand lizards\, slow worms and specialist invertebrates. Learn how these species use the mosaic of heather\, gorse\, bare ground and scrub. \n\n\n\nSpecies‑Rich Grasslands\n\n\n\nExplore the meadows and grasslands around Haslemere\, how they’re created and restored\, and why they’re vital for pollinators\, butterflies and soil health. \n\n\n\nLandscape Connectivity\n\n\n\nSee how heathlands and grasslands fit into the wider Haslemere Ecological Network and how improving links between sites helps wildlife move\, feed and breed. \n\n\n\nCommunity Action\n\n\n\nLearn how residents\, schools and community groups can support these habitats through citizen science\, volunteering\, wildlife‑friendly gardening and local advocacy. \n\n\n\nWho is this event for?\n\n\n\nEveryone; walkers\, dog‑owners\, families\, naturalists\, photographers\, outdoor educators\, and anyone curious about the landscapes that make Haslemere unique. \n\n\n\nPart of the Haslemere Nature Recovery Strategy (HNRS)\n\n\n\nThis event is one of a series of free community sessions running through May and July\, each focusing on a different habitat. DESCRIPTION:Haslemere Biodiversity is delighted to share that our Chair\, Dr Philippa Guest\, has been invited to present a case study at the 7th annual Surrey Biodiversity & Planning Conference\, hosted by the Surrey Nature Partnership. \n\n\n\nThis respected annual gathering brings together planners\, ecologists\, local authorities\, community groups and nature‑focused professionals from across the county. Philippa will be sharing insights from the Haslemere Biodiversity Group’s work on Haslemere’s Nature Recovery Strategy (HNRS) which offers a practical\, community‑driven example of nature recovery in action. \n\n\n\nHer 10‑minute presentation will explore what has worked well\, the challenges encountered\, and how the planning system has shaped the development of the HNRS. A live Q&A session will follow\, giving attendees the chance to dig deeper into the process and learn from Haslemere’s experience. \n\n\n\nAbout the Conference\n\n\n\nNow in its seventh year\, the Surrey Biodiversity & Planning Conference brings together around 100 professionals for a day of: \n\n\n\n\nEngaging keynote talks\n\n\n\nInspiring case studies from across Surrey\n\n\n\nHands‑on workshops\n\n\n\nUpdates on the Surrey Local Nature Recovery Strategy \n\n\n\nPlenty of friendly networking opportunities\n\n\n\n\nIn the afternoon\, participants can choose between exploring the Living Planet Centre or joining a guided canalside walk. Tickets include lunch and refreshments\, with discounted rates available for students\, community groups\, parish and town councils\, and public‑sector attendees. \n\n\n\nThis Year’s Theme\n\n\n\nChallenges and Successes of the Planning System for Nature Recovery \n\n\n\nSpeakers from standout nature‑recovery projects across Surrey will share honest reflections on what’s working\, what’s difficult\, and how planning frameworks can better support ecological outcomes. SUMMARY:Swift Recovery Project: Registration Window
DESCRIPTION:Haslemere Biodiversity is launching the Swift Recovery Project\, a community‑led effort to welcome swifts back to our summer skies. These extraordinary birds have declined by around 68% in the South‑East since 1994\, largely due to the loss of traditional nesting spaces in our buildings. By installing swift nest boxes across key streets in Haslemere\, Shottermill and Beacon Hill\, we’re working with partners to reverse this trend and rebuild thriving local colonies. \n\n\n\nThe registration window is the first step. If you live on a target street and received a leaflet\, you’re invited to register for a swift box installation. Homes will be assessed in March for suitability\, swifts need a high\, sheltered spot with a clear flight path\, and installations will take place in late March and early April\, just before the birds return from Africa. \n\n\n\nBoxes and installation are offered at £60\, made possible by an incredible volunteer team donating time\, materials and expertise. If cost is a barrier\, please let us know; we’re fundraising to support residents who need help to take part. \n\n\n\nRegister by 15 February 2026 (by emailing us at info@haslemerebiodiversity.org.uk) to join the project and help bring the joy of swifts back to Haslemere’s skies.
