Following February’s registration window, the Swift Recovery Project now moves into its assessment phase. Between 1 and 21 March, our volunteer team will be visiting participating homes across Haslemere, Shottermill and Beacon Hill to check whether each property offers the right conditions for swift nesting.
Swifts need a high, sheltered position, ideally under eaves or gables, with a clear flight path free from overhanging trees or wires. They approach their nest holes at speed, so ensuring safe access is essential. Assessments also help us determine the best orientation for each box, avoiding overheating and maximising the chances of attracting breeding pairs.
These visits are quick, friendly and carried out from the outside of the property. Once assessments are complete, eligible homes will be scheduled for installation during the final project phase in late March and early April, just before the swifts return from Africa.
This assessment window is a key step in creating a network of safe, suitable nest sites across the town, a community effort to welcome these extraordinary birds back to our summer skies.
