April 1 – October 31
The Sunset Survey, run by the Bat Conservation Trust as part of the National Bat Monitoring Programme, is a brilliant way to discover the bats and other nocturnal wildlife living alongside us. Taking place from April to October, it’s designed for complete beginners as well as seasoned nature‑watchers, and is perfect for families, friends, or anyone curious about the wildlife that wakes up when we wind down.
All you need to do is spend one hour from sunset (or an hour before sunrise) watching from your window, balcony, garden, or local green space. Record any bats you see swooping overhead, as well as other night‑time visitors such as foxes, hedgehogs, owls, or moths. Once you’ve completed your hour, simply submit your sightings to the Bat Conservation Trust to help build a national picture of how bats are faring across the UK.
The Sunset Survey is one of the easiest and most rewarding ways to take part in citizen science, no specialist equipment or prior experience needed. Just step outside, look up, and let the night unfold.
