The Big Garden Birdwatch is the UK’s biggest citizen science wildlife survey. It takes place annually and helps the RSPB understand how our garden birds are doing. Members of the public are asked to record bird sightings in their garden for 1 hour over the course of a two day period and report findings via the RSPB website. Over 600,000 people took part in Big Garden Birdwatch 2024, counting a whopping 9.7 million birds. House Sparrows took the top spot, but counts are down by 60% compared to the first Birdwatch in 1979. In fact, the RSPB reports we’ve lost 38 million birds from UK skies in the last 60 years.
